Fast to start, easy to use – Most of the social media sites are user friendly which allows anyone to set up an account and start posting in five minutes or less, even with limited technical knowledge

Instantaneous Feedback – Feedback is the feature that made social media a revolutionary marketing tool.  It is no longer a one-way lecture where the audience can only receive.  It goes even further by adding a second dimension: interaction.  This enables nonprofits to gather excitement, buzz, or even frustration to adjust outreach efforts accordingly.

No commitments – There is no commitment for the organization.  There are no startup costs to join, no hidden requirements and no deadlines to meet.  The organization’s commitment with a social media channel can ebb and flow as needed. That being said, as with anything, quality work needs to be put into social media to receive its full benefit.

These three characteristics are driving the web marketing revolution.  The question is not if an organization should pursue social media but how to reap its benefits most efficiently.  This is the first of a series of posts on how to harness the benefits of social media first by understanding its capabilities and developing a planto engage the audience to further your mission.
